Who is Auto Specialties? Who is the person behind the leading underdrive pulley manufacturer? Here is a little about the designer slash owner of ASP. First a short history of how we got started. I am Lee Cooper. My rise to the CEO of ASP is a story of hard work. Larry Sample started this company in 1988. He had just purchased a 1988 LX mustang and wondered if changing the accessory pulleys would free up any HP for the car. His experience in chains and sprockets on dirt bikes to change ratios was the basis for the idea on the pulleys. After making one part for prototype and testing on the track the idea had proved it works. Before long he made 10 pieces and put flyers on windows of fellow mustang owners and eventually sold them. 10 more were made and sold a little faster as word of mouth at the track got out. Months later more were made and business like Connley’s Performance and Texas Turbo were ordering mustang and now Grand National pulleys. From there, Summit Racing placed orders for then new pulleys and ASP was on its way to making underdrive pulleys. This is where I come in. In 1992 I moved to Texas from Louisiana and got a job part time running CNC machines for ASP. Working my way up from running CNC’s to programming and finally running the shop. In 1997 Larry decided to retire so I bought out Mr. Sample and took over the day-to-day operations. Since 1997 ASP has grown in size both dealer and product wise. We have added more equipment and now a new 12.000sq.ft. Shop. We are currently running 4 CNC laythes and 1 CNC mills. All of the custom work we do is run on manual laythe and 2 manual mills. The automatic saw runs non-stop to keep up with the CNC machines. It is our continued effort to quality and designing new parts that keeps ASP at the forefront of the underdrive pulley market. Next time you see other manufacture’s offering parts remember, ASP is the one who started the market and leads in the evolution of the idea.

Who is that pulley expert on the other end of the line? That would be Candice Salmon. She is am important part of ASP’s sales team. Having been apart of ASP’s growth for 12 years now, she knows her pulleys. Candice is the lady that keeps the office running and orders shipping. All of the paper work from taking and processing your order goes through her. Though Candice does not do the shipping anymore she makes sure your order gets out on time and correct. She trains our shipping department and the same expectations for quality are passed to the employees boxing your orders. It is her goal to give you the best advice and find an application that is right for you. Next time you call think about the knowledge she has and know you are getting a quality ASP part.
